THE SPICE OF LIFE

GROWING YOUR OWN SPICE GARDEN

When cooking, spices give every dish that certain something. Fresh herbs in particular enhance the flavour and appearance of dishes. They add an intensity of flavour that dried spice mixtures cannot offer. You can read here how easy it is to grow your own herb garden, from which you can benefit for a long time.

THE RIGHT CHOICE

Classics that belong in every herb garden:

  • Basil
  • parsley
  • mint
  • rosemary
  • Thyme

More exotic options to make your dishes even more varied:

  • Coriander
  • lemongrass
  • oregano
  • tarragon
  • turmeric

PLANTING AND CARE

Before you start planting, it is advisable to consider where the herbs should grow. While Mediterranean herbs in particular prefer sunny locations, mint and parsley need moist soil. There are two methods of growing herbs: Either sow the seeds directly or use seedlings that only need to be planted. Regular watering should not be forgotten, but care should be taken not to water too much to prevent waterlogging.

HARVESTING AND STORAGE

For even more intense flavours, the spices should be harvested in the morning. If you don't need the spices fresh for a dish, you should dry the leaves or simply freeze them - this way they will keep even longer.

SEASONS

Herbs can be sown in spring so that they are ready to harvest in summer. Herbs such as basil, mint and rosemary in particular require constant care to ensure the best possible growth. When it gets colder outside, the last harvests are due - the herb garden should then be prepared for winter, for example by mulching or providing additional protection from the cold.

USE IN THE KITCHEN

Fresh herbs can be used in many different ways. Here are some ideas for using your home-grown herbs in the kitchen. Basil is particularly suitable for a fresh pesto, for a caprese salad or for various dishes with tomatoes. Rosemary goes particularly well with fresh meat, baked potatoes or home-baked bread. Fresh mint can be used to flavour drinks, desserts and salads. Thyme is a real all-rounder in soups, stews and barbecue marinades. Coriander is the ideal addition to curries, salsas and Asian dishes.

COMBINATIONS

Of course, you can also make your own spice blends from the herbs you have collected. Rosemary, thyme and oregano, for example, make an excellent Mediterranean blend to flavour pasta and pizza. The combination of mint and lemongrass for exotic cocktails and desserts is a little more unusual. In autumn, ginger, turmeric and rosemary are particularly suitable for seasoning stews.
