Wardrobes with sliding doors – Möbel Ehrmann

Wardrobes with sliding doors – stylish and space-saving furnishings

In our range you’ll find wardrobes with sliding doors in a wide range of sizes, materials and designs – from compact sliding-door wardrobes for small bedrooms to spacious models with mirrored fronts. Sliding-door wardrobes combine clean lines with ample storage space and are suitable for almost any room layout. Be inspired by our range and discover which sliding-door wardrobe suits your interior style.

What makes a wardrobe with sliding doors stand out?

A wardrobe with sliding doors is the space-saving alternative to the classic hinged-door wardrobe. Instead of swinging outwards, the doors glide quietly along a track. This means there are no swing zones in front of the wardrobe that would otherwise be blocked – a noticeable advantage in small bedrooms, hallways or rooms with sloping ceilings.

In the furniture trade, the term ‘floating-door wardrobe’ has also become established for this design. Technically, it describes models whose doors appear to float because they are guided by a lower rail rather than an upper one. In terms of function and design, sliding-door wardrobes and floating-door wardrobes are largely identical, which is why both terms are often used interchangeably during consultations.

Advantages of sliding doors over hinged doors

The main advantage of a wardrobe with sliding doors is its space-saving design. No space is required in front of the wardrobe for the doors to swing open, so you can place a bed, a chest of drawers or an armchair directly in front of it. Particularly in bedrooms smaller than 14 square metres, this often makes sensible furnishing possible in the first place.

Added to this is the uncluttered look: a wide sliding door front appears more spacious and tidier than three or four separate hinged doors. Combined with large mirrored surfaces or continuous wood finishes, this creates a modern, cosy feel that blends harmoniously with a variety of interior styles. If you’re thinking about suitable additions, you’ll find further inspiration in our range of bedroom furniture.

Another key aspect is ease of use. High-quality running systems with soft-close damping ensure that the doors close gently and quietly – a comfort feature that you’ll soon take for granted in everyday life. In contrast, comparable hinged doors require additional fittings to close with a similar level of damping.

Interior fittings – keeping things tidy made easy

The interior fittings determine how practical your wardrobe is for everyday use. Standard fittings typically include shelves, clothes rails and one or two drawers. Models in the premium range offer additional laundry compartments, pull-out trouser racks, jewellery inserts or integrated LED lighting that switches on automatically when the wardrobe is opened.

With a sliding-door wardrobe, it makes sense to adapt the internal layout to your main clothing needs. If you mainly hang long items – such as coats, dresses or shirts – you should ensure there is a continuous hanging area at least 110 centimetres high. For trousers, jumpers and underwear, a combination of several shelves and drawers is ideal. Dividing the wardrobe into two or three functional zones per person has proven effective in practice.

If you’re unsure which interior fittings best suit your needs, our team will be happy to advise you in person at one of our showrooms. Our interior design consultants will work with you to plan your wardrobe – including recommendations for a matching bed and the right lighting. Choice of material: solid wood, laminate or mirror?

When choosing a sliding-door wardrobe, the material you select is primarily determined by the door fronts, as these define the wardrobe’s overall effect in the room. Doors made from solid wood such as oak, beech or heartwood ash feature a warm, natural grain and are ideal for bedrooms with a classic or natural style. A wooden sliding-door wardrobe looks high-quality, is robust and develops an attractive patina as it ages.

In addition, decor-coated chipboard is the standard choice. It is easy to care for, dimensionally stable and available in a wide range of colours – from simple white and sand oak to anthracite or high-gloss. A white sliding-door wardrobe is particularly suitable if you want to create a timeless, light-coloured bedroom that will still look fresh even after a few years.

Doors with mirrored fronts serve a dual purpose: they provide you with a generous full-length mirror and make the room appear larger. A wardrobe with sliding doors and a mirror can be a good choice if the bedroom is rather narrow or receives little natural light. A combination of wood finish and mirror on a single front creates additional visual depth. If you have a preference for specific manufacturers, you can use our brand portfolio as a guide.

The right size – tips for every room

Choosing the right wardrobe size is closely linked to the room layout and your storage needs. As a rule of thumb, you should allow for around 1.2 metres of wardrobe width per person. Two people sharing a wardrobe will generally be fine with a total width of between 2.40 and 3.00 metres.

The 200 cm wide sliding-door wardrobe is very popular. This size fits into almost any standard bedroom and offers plenty of space for a hanging section, several linen compartments and a few drawers. For those who need more storage capacity, the range also includes models measuring 250, 270 or 300 centimetres in width. For rooms with lower ceilings, a height of around 210 centimetres is recommended; in older flats, a height of 230 centimetres may also be advisable to make the most of the space at the top.

You should also consider the ratio of doors to the front panel layout. A wardrobe with sliding doors and a three-panel front creates a particularly calm impression, as the continuous panels have a visually soothing effect on the room. Narrower two-door models are a good option for single-person households or guest rooms. You’ll find a comprehensive selection of classic designs in our wardrobes category.

Buying guide: What to look out for when choosing a sliding-door wardrobe

When choosing a new sliding-door wardrobe, it’s worth taking a close look at a few quality features. High-quality models run on enclosed rollers with ball bearings, come fitted as standard with soft-close mechanisms and maintain their precise track alignment even after years of intensive use. A double running rail prevents the doors from coming off their tracks when they are slightly heavier or fitted with a mirrored front.

A second criterion is the quality of the cabinet structure. Sturdy back panels, neatly edge-glued shelves and consistent workmanship are all indicators of a long service life. If the wardrobe is to be placed in an unheated or damp room – such as a basement flat – the material should be suitably resistant to damp. We’d be happy to advise you on this and help you choose a wardrobe that will bring you many years of enjoyment in your home.

Also bear in mind assembly and delivery. At Möbel Ehrmann, our in-house fitting teams can assemble your wardrobe directly in your home on request – without the need for external contractors and with the care you’d expect from a family-run business with over 30 years’ experience. Professional assembly is particularly worthwhile for a heavy sliding-door wardrobe with a mirrored front or a cabinet height of more than two metres, as the running rails must be precisely aligned to ensure the doors continue to operate smoothly for years to come. We also offer affordable financing options as part of our service, should you wish to pay for your purchase in instalments.

Before making a purchase, it’s a good idea to take a quick measurement of your bedroom and take into account any existing sockets, windows and radiators. Also, make a note of how many metres of hanging space you actually need, which laundry compartments you’re currently missing, and whether you need drawers for jewellery or ties. With this key information to hand, you’ll be able to find the right model for you much more quickly during a consultation or in the online shop – and avoid making the wrong purchase from the outset.

We offer personalised advice—both locally and online
