TEMPUR PREMIUM FLEX 500 slatted frame
Slatted bed base: The foundation for a restful night’s sleep
A good slatted base is the often-overlooked foundation of a good night’s sleep – it supports the mattress, distributes body weight and influences both your comfort and the lifespan of your mattress. At Möbel Ehrmann, you’ll find a carefully curated selection of slatted bases in all standard sizes, from classic spring slats to motorised adjustable models. As a family-run business with over 30 years’ experience in the furniture trade, we offer personalised advice and help you find the model that’s right for you.
What a good slatted bed base does
The slatted base – often also referred to as a slatted frame or bed base – fulfils two key functions: it supports the mattress from below whilst ensuring ergonomic pressure distribution. A high-quality mattress can only perform to its full potential if the base is suitable. This is precisely why the mattress and bed base should be regarded as a coordinated system.
Spring slats cushion your body weight and relieve pressure on your spinal discs and muscles. High-quality models feature centrally positioned sliders that allow you to adjust the firmness in the shoulder and pelvic areas to suit your sleeping position. Side sleepers benefit from a softer shoulder zone, while stomach sleepers often prefer a firmer central zone. You can find a detailed overview of this topic in our sleep quality guide.
What types of slatted bed bases are available?
The design determines how much comfort and how many features your bed base offers. We stock three main categories, each suited to different needs.
Fixed and manually adjustable
Fixed slatted bases are the budget-friendly entry-level option: sturdy springwood slats, a robust frame, and no moving parts. They are ideal for guest bedrooms and for anyone looking for a straightforward, durable base. With manually adjustable models, the head and foot sections can be raised by hand – ideal for reading in bed or for a relaxing reclining position after long days at work.
Electric or motorised slatted bed base
An electric slatted base adjusts the head and foot sections to the desired position at the touch of a button. Using a wired or wireless remote control, you can set individual reclining positions, often with a memory function for your favourite setting. This option can be a good choice if, for health reasons, you frequently change your lying position, read a lot in bed or are caring for a relative. The motors operate quietly and are generally designed for a long service life.
Slatted bed base
The disc slatted base replaces traditional wooden slats with flexible disc elements that adapt precisely to the body’s contours. The result: a more even distribution of pressure than with standard slatted bases, and significantly better support for the hips, shoulders and lumbar region. Disc slatted bases are particularly recommended in combination with pocket spring mattresses or high-quality cold foam mattresses. Anyone who values the best possible sleeping comfort should take a closer look at this premium option in our showroom.
Finding the right slatted bed base size
To ensure that the slatted base and mattress fit perfectly within the bed frame, the dimensions must match exactly. We stock all common German standard sizes – and for non-standard sizes, our suppliers can often produce custom-made items on request.
90×200 slatted base for single beds
The 90×200 slatted base is the classic single bed size – ideal for teenagers’ bedrooms, single-person households or guest rooms. It offers sufficient freedom of movement for adults of average build and can be easily combined with adjustable models.
120×200 slatted base for more space
The 120×200 slatted base is the more comfortable single option – offering more sleeping space for a peaceful night’s sleep, without having to opt for a double bed. Popular in bedrooms with limited floor space or as a spacious guest bed.
Slatted bed base 140×200 – the most popular size
The 140×200 slatted base is one of the most popular sizes in Germany. It is used in both spacious single beds and French beds. For couples, however, 140 cm is rather tight – anyone who values an undisturbed night’s sleep should opt for a wider version.
Slatted bed base 160×200 and slatted bed base 180×200
For standard double beds, two separate slatted bases in sizes 80×200 or 90×200 are typically used, which together measure 160 or 180 cm in width. This allows each person to choose their own firmness setting – a significant advantage when two people with different sleeping preferences share a bed. The 160×200 slatted base offers a comfortable double-bed width, whilst the 180×200 slatted base is ideal for spacious bedrooms with a regal feel.
Slatted base and mattress – the perfect pairing
The bed base and mattress should be considered as a single unit. A pocket spring mattress really comes into its own on a flexible slatted frame or a disc slatted base; very soft memory foam mattresses require an even, slightly firmer base. For cold foam mattresses, a slatted base with sufficient air circulation is recommended to prevent moisture from becoming trapped in the material.
With box spring beds, boxes containing springs or foam cores take on the role of a traditional slatted frame – no additional slatted base is required here. For all other beds, the following applies: a well-coordinated system comprising bed frame, slatted base and mattress ensures the best possible sleep quality. You’ll find inspiration for the right bed frame in our Sleep World, where we consider beds, mattresses and accessories as a complete package.
Care and service life
A high-quality slatted base will serve you well for many years. To ensure that the slats and mechanisms continue to function reliably over time, you should turn the mattress regularly and give the slatted base a quick hoover every few months. For adjustable models, it is advisable to check the movement of the head and foot sections from time to time. If you’re thinking about upgrading your sleep system, we can offer you free advice on firmness levels, sleeping comfort and the right base.
