Vito cold foam mattress SENSIO STAR
Cold foam mattress: restful sleep with modern foam technology
A cold foam mattress combines high point elasticity, comfortable pressure relief and good air circulation in a single mattress – which is why it has been one of the most popular types of mattress in German bedrooms for years. At Möbel Ehrmann, you’ll find a carefully curated selection of cold foam mattresses in various firmness levels, heights and configurations. Our interior design consultants are on hand to help you find the model that’s right for you.
What makes a cold foam mattress stand out?
The term ‘cold foam mattress’ refers to a mattress whose core consists of foamed polyurethane that is cured without the application of heat. This manufacturing process creates an open-cell structure, which offers two key properties: the foam is breathable and reliably wicks moisture away. At the same time, the material reacts elastically to pressure and quickly returns to its original shape once the pressure is released.
High-quality models feature contoured sleeping surfaces with multiple comfort zones. Certain areas of the mattress – such as the shoulders and pelvis – are designed to be slightly softer, whilst the lumbar spine and hips receive targeted support. This means that, for side sleepers, the shoulders sink in deeper whilst the pelvis does not sag. This zoning is usually implemented with seven zones, although some manufacturers also use five or nine zones.
The key benefits of a cold foam mattress at a glance
The advantages of a cold foam mattress become particularly apparent when compared directly with other types of mattress, such as spring or latex. If you value precise adaptation to the contours of your body and, at the same time, don’t want to get too warm whilst sleeping, a cold foam core is often a good choice.
- Point elasticity: The foam only gives way where pressure is applied – the rest of the body remains firmly supported.
- A climate-neutral sleeping experience: Open-cell structures ensure continuous air circulation.
- Quiet: Unlike spring mattresses, cold foam mattresses operate silently – a benefit for light sleepers.
- Lightweight: Turning and changing the bed linen is easier than with many alternatives.
- Long lifespan: High-quality cores retain their shape for many years and lose hardly any of their support.

Choose the right firmness level for your cold foam mattress
Choosing the right level of firmness is one of the most important steps when buying a mattress. The key factors here are your body weight and your preferred sleeping position. A mattress that is too soft can cause the spine to sag, whilst one that is too hard can cause pressure points and restrict blood circulation.
Firmness guide based on body weight
Mattress firmness ratings are not standardised and vary between manufacturers. The following guide may offer some initial assistance:
- H2 (soft/medium): generally suitable for people weighing up to around 80 kg
- H3 (medium firm): often works well for people weighing between 80 and 100 kg
- H4 (fixed): is often recommended for people weighing around 100 kg or more
- H5 (extra firm): may be a good choice for those weighing around 120 kg or more
Sleeping position as an additional factor
Side sleepers benefit from a mattress that provides targeted support in the shoulder area, ensuring the spine remains straight. Back sleepers need even support in the lumbar region. Stomach sleepers should opt for a slightly firmer mattress to prevent the pelvis from sinking too low and to ensure the lumbar spine remains supported.
As body type, sleeping comfort and sleeping position vary from person to person, it’s worth trying out a mattress before making a decision. In our furniture stores in the Palatinate, Baden and Trier, you can take your time to test different firmness levels.
Cold foam mattresses for back pain – what to look out for
An ergonomically well-designed cold foam mattress for back pain can significantly improve your night-time rest. It is crucial that the mattress supports the body in the natural S-shape of the spine. Models with distinct support zones, a high density rating and a slatted base tailored to this are often ideal in this situation.
The density (RG) indicates how many kilograms of foam are contained in one cubic metre of material. Values from RG 40 upwards are considered high quality, whilst RG 50 and above indicate a particularly durable and supportive product. Anyone suffering from muscle tension or back problems should look for high-quality cores when making a purchase and, where possible, choose a mattress that is compatible with a suitable slatted base or box spring.
Quality features: What matters in a cold foam mattress
The market offers a wide range of cold foam mattresses across different price brackets. Even an affordable cold foam mattress can provide a comfortable night’s sleep – though in the higher price range, you’ll often find models with more elaborate covers, a higher density and more finely contoured support zones. Whether a particular model has been named a ‘test winner’ is just one factor among many.
- Density: from RG 40 for a longer service life; from RG 50 for very high standards
- Compression hardness: describes how strongly the foam resists pressure
- Cover: removable where possible and washable at a minimum of 60 °C
- Core height: from 14 cm for adequate sleeping comfort, often 16 to 20 cm
- Certificates: Indications that materials have been tested for harmful substances provide additional reassurance
Care and lifespan of your cold foam mattress
To ensure you enjoy your cold foam mattress for many years to come, it should be turned and rotated regularly. Rotating it once a quarter has proven to be a good routine. The cover should be washed in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations; the core itself should not be put in the washing machine. Adequate ventilation – for example, in the morning when airing out the bedroom – promotes hygiene and prevents moisture build-up.
A suitable slatted base also plays a significant role in the mattress’s lifespan. A base that is too rigid prevents the mattress from adapting to your body, whilst one that is too soft weakens its supportive effect. When used in combination with a suitable slatted base, a cold foam mattress can reach its full potential. If you are considering a complete bedroom makeover, we recommend seeking advice on the entire sleep system, comprising the bed frame, slatted base, mattress and bedding.
