Loft bed – Möbel Ehrmann

Buy a loft bed – space-saving bedroom furniture for your home

A loft bed combines sleeping comfort with clever use of space, creating valuable storage space, a desk area or a small play corner beneath the sleeping surface. At Möbel Ehrmann, you’ll find a carefully curated selection of different models – from sturdy solid wood beds for children to modern designs for teenagers’ bedrooms and flats. Let our in-store interior design consultants show you which model best fits your space.

Loft beds as a clever space-saving solution for small rooms

Anyone looking to combine living, sleeping and working within a few square metres will particularly benefit from a loft bed. The sleeping area moves upwards, leaving the floor free – and suddenly a second room is created within the room. This vertical use of space is particularly popular in children’s bedrooms, student flats and households with several children, where every square metre counts.

The difference compared to a traditional bunk bed lies in the design: whilst a bunk bed offers two sleeping spaces one above the other, a loft bed creates a sleeping area with an open, freely usable space underneath. This means that a desk, chest of drawers, clothes rail or seating can be accommodated beneath the sleeping area. The loft beds in our range are designed so that the lower level offers sufficient headroom for comfortable use.

Loft beds for children – a play area and sleeping space in one

For children aged six and over, a loft bed is often more than just a piece of furniture. It becomes a retreat, a den, an adventure camp. The raised sleeping area gives many children a sense of independence, whilst the open space underneath can become a play area. Parents appreciate the space-saving design because it makes the child’s bedroom look tidier whilst also providing storage space for toys.

When buying a loft bed for children, you should look for a sturdy construction, rounded edges and a safe way to climb up. A ladder with steps that are deep enough makes it easier to climb up every day, whilst a continuous safety rail around the sleeping area protects against falls during the night. We’d be happy to advise you on the appropriate age for your child to start using a loft bed and which models can grow with them through longer growth spurts.

Loft bed with desk – the perfect combination for studying and sleeping

When children start school, the requirements for their bedroom change. They need a quiet space for homework without sacrificing play area. A loft bed with a desk elegantly solves this problem: the work surface is located directly beneath the sleeping area, often in an open, well-lit alcove. Some models feature the desk as an integrated element, whilst other versions allow a freestanding desk to be slid flexibly under the sleeping area.

With this combination, ensure there is sufficient lighting in the lower area, as the upper level may block out daylight. A desk lamp and, if necessary, an additional spotlight on the bed frame ensure ergonomic lighting conditions. Headroom above the desk is also crucial – teenagers and adults need more height than younger children.

Solid wooden loft beds – quality that lasts for years

Solid wood loft beds are among the most durable models on the market. Solid wood is highly resistant to stress, does not creak when properly crafted, and retains its stability for many years. Popular woods include pine, beech and spruce – each with its own distinctive grain and colour. Oiled or waxed finishes allow the natural structure to remain visible, whilst varnished versions offer a uniform colour that suits many interior styles.

A solid wood loft bed should be checked regularly to ensure the screws are tight, as wood is a living material and expands slightly in response to fluctuations in temperature and humidity. Occasional readjustment of the joints helps maintain stability in the long term. Dry, well-ventilated rooms are best – damp cellars or bedrooms with persistently high humidity can damage the wood over time.

Buying a loft bed on a budget – what to look out for in terms of value for money

Anyone looking to purchase a loft bed at an affordable price is faced with a wide range of price points. The decisive factor is not the lowest price alone, but the balance between material quality, stability and workmanship in relation to the amount invested. A loft bed is used every day and subjected to wear and tear over several years – cutting corners on the construction rarely pays off.

Look out for the following quality features before deciding on a model:

  • Sturdy posts with sufficient cross-section – usually 8 x 8 cm or more
  • Slatted base with at least 13 to 15 bentwood slats for even support
  • Securely fitted fall protection and sturdy ladders with non-slip rungs
  • Neatly finished edges, no sharp corners or protruding screws
  • Clear information on the maximum weight capacity (often 90 to 150 kg)

Möbel Ehrmann offers affordable financing plans if you’d like to pay for your purchase in instalments. Please speak to our team in the showroom – together we’ll find a solution that suits your budget.

Space-saving loft beds for a small children’s bedroom

In a small children’s bedroom, the choice of furniture determines how much space is left for movement. A space-saving loft bed utilises vertical space rather than floor space – freeing up the floor for a rug, a play area or a small wardrobe. Particularly in narrow rooms measuring less than six square metres, this design can make the difference between a cluttered and a tidy room.

For a small children’s bedroom, a compact sleeping area, often 90 x 200 cm, is recommended. Models with built-in storage – such as drawers in the ladder or shelving compartments at the front – make good use of every centimetre. If you browse our Sofas and Armchairs category, you’ll also find compact seating options that look great in a teenager’s bedroom.

Personal advice at the Möbel Ehrmann showroom

Choosing the right loft bed depends on many factors: room height, the child’s age, the intended use of the lower level and the preferred material. In our furniture stores in the Palatinate, Baden and Trier, we have various models on display, fully assembled and ready for use. This allows you to see for yourself how the ladder feels, how sturdy the structure appears and how much headroom is available on the sleeping surface and underneath it.

As a family-run business with over 30 years’ experience, we understand how important it is to make the right choice when selecting a piece of furniture that will be used for many years to come. Upon request, our own assembly teams will carry out the assembly at your home – without the need for external contractors, carried out directly by our own staff. You can find an overview of all our branches on our branch locator.

If you’d like to completely redecorate your child’s bedroom, it’s also worth taking a look at our brand portfolio. There you’ll find a selection of manufacturers we’ve been working with for many years – ranging from the premium segment to younger, trend-oriented ranges.

Frequently asked questions about loft beds

From what age are loft beds suitable for children?

Most manufacturers recommend a loft bed for children aged six and above. However, it is not so much the child’s age that matters as their motor skills – they should be able to climb up and down the ladder safely. If you are unsure, we would be happy to advise you on an individual basis.

What mattress height is suitable for a loft bed?

To ensure the safety rail fulfils its protective function, the mattress should not extend higher than the safety rail. Mattresses with a height of 12 to 18 cm are standard. A mattress that is too thick raises the sleeping surface and reduces the safe distance from the edge.

Can a loft bed be converted or moved at a later date?

Solid loft beds can usually be dismantled and reassembled in a different location. If you’re moving house or redesigning a room, our assembly teams can take care of the assembly and dismantling. Please contact us about this service if you require it.
