Children’s desks – workstations that grow with schoolchildren
A children’s desk will be with your child for many years – from their first writing exercises in nursery right through to secondary school. To ensure this desk supports not only homework but also good posture, the right height, a well-designed work surface and child-friendly materials are essential. In our category, you’ll find models that can be adjusted to suit different stages of growth, as well as classic designs for older pupils – complemented by our personalised advice at our showrooms in the Palatinate, Baden and Trier.
Why it’s important for children to have their own desk
As soon as children start reading, writing and doing crafts regularly, it’s worth having a dedicated workspace in their bedroom. The dining table is usually too high, too unstable and poorly lit, placing unnecessary strain on the shoulder and neck muscles. A specially designed children’s desk, on the other hand, offers the seat height, depth and legroom that suit schoolchildren’s physiques.
There’s also the psychological aspect: having their own children’s desk establishes a routine and helps with the transition from play to focused work. Filing folders, pens and exercise books have a fixed place, which reduces the daily search for them and encourages independent learning. Particularly in the early years of school, this small amount of structure lays a foundation that will prove beneficial later on with presentations, class tests and A-levels.
A children’s desk that grows with your child – a flexible solution for many years to come
In recent years, a height-adjustable children’s desk has established itself as the most durable investment for a child’s bedroom. A mechanism—usually with stepped adjustment or a crank—enables height adjustment from approximately 53 cm to 80 cm, ensuring a single model grows with your child from their first school days through their teenage years.
Many height-adjustable models also feature a tilting worktop. A slight tilt of 10 to 16 degrees is ideal for writing and drawing, as it keeps the head and neck in a more relaxed position. A horizontal position is recommended for craft projects, using a laptop or reading thicker books. This dual functionality makes an ergonomic children’s desk a sensible choice if you’re planning a purchase that will last for many years. A children’s desk that grows with your child therefore saves you from having to buy a second model when they reach secondary school.
What to look out for when adjusting the height
When selecting a height-adjustable children’s desk, opt for a tool-free adjustment mechanism – ideally via a crank or easy-to-grip levers. A mechanism that absolutely requires an Allen key and parental assistance will rarely be used in everyday life. A stable final position is also important: the desk should lock securely into place after adjustment and show no play whatsoever when the child leans on it.
Ergonomics: healthy sitting at a desk for children
Correct sitting posture prevents back problems and aids concentration. As a rule of thumb: when your child is sitting upright, their upper and lower arms should form a right angle as soon as their hands rest on the tabletop. The feet should be flat on the floor or on a footrest, with the thighs parallel to the floor.
For this to work, the children’s desk and chair should be considered as a single unit. A height-adjustable swivel chair with an adjustable backrest is the perfect complement to a desk that grows with your child. For younger children, a footrest is also recommended so that their legs aren’t dangling in the air. Our interior design consultants will be happy to work with you to coordinate the desk, chair and lighting during a personal consultation.
Materials – what matters when choosing a children’s desk
A good children’s desk should be sturdy, low in harmful substances and easy to look after. Solid wood – such as beech, maple or oak – brings warmth to the room, is very durable and develops a beautiful patina as it ages. An oiled surface can be touched up even after many years, and minor scratches usually remain barely noticeable.
Models with a melamine or HPL finish stand out thanks to their robust, wipe-clean surface. Markers, watercolours and glue residue can usually be removed with a damp cloth. A light-coloured tabletop aids reading and writing because it reflects daylight evenly. If you prefer a splash of colour, we also offer combinations of wood with accents in pastel or bold shades – without the table looking dated after just a few years.
Free from harmful substances and designed to last
As children spend many hours at their desks, it’s worth looking for certified materials. Labels such as the GS mark, the Blue Angel or a low-emission E1 classification provide guidance. We stock manufacturers known for their quality – an aspect we’re happy to discuss during your consultation.
Choosing the right size and features
The work surface of a children’s desk should measure at least 100 × 60 cm to accommodate exercise books, books and writing materials at the same time. These dimensions have proven suitable for a children’s desk during primary school years. For older schoolchildren who also use a laptop or monitor, 120 × 70 cm or more is recommended. Ensure the desk is deep enough to accommodate the screen and keyboard without crowding out a writing pad or maths book.
Well-designed storage keeps the workspace clear: storage units on castors, drawer units or a matching shelf above the desk top help keep things organised. Many models in this category can be expanded with add-on shelves or extension units – so the furniture grows with your child’s school career. If you’d like to completely refurnish your child’s bedroom, it’s worth taking a look at our wider living collections under ‘Brands’, where you’ll find suitable options for families.
Positioning a children’s desk cleverly in the bedroom
The positioning of the children’s desk in the room has a greater impact on learning than many people realise. Ideally, it should be positioned at right angles to the window, so that daylight falls on the work surface from the side – from the left for right-handers, from the right for left-handers. This prevents any distracting shadows from falling on the exercise book. An additional desk lamp with warm white, glare-free light complements the daylight during the darker months.
If you’re unsure how best to arrange the bed, wardrobe and desk in your child’s bedroom, we’ll plan the room together with you. You can bring along any existing floor plans or describe the room to us during a face-to-face consultation. Our advisers will then develop suggestions based on this that suit your interior style and your child’s age.
At what age does it make sense to get a children’s desk?
By the time your child starts school at the latest, there should be a children’s desk in their bedroom. Many families opt for a small model as early as pre-school age, so that pre-school workbooks, picture books and craft materials have a designated place. A height-adjustable desk can be set particularly low at this age and will then accompany the child seamlessly into primary school.
In secondary school, requirements change: laptops, multiple screens, larger textbooks and more storage space for folders become essential. This is when it becomes clear whether a desk chosen from the outset was future-proof – or whether a second, larger model is needed. We’d be happy to advise you on which option best suits your budget and living situation.
