Ceiling lights – Möbel Ehrmann

Ceiling lights for every room – lighting with character at Möbel Ehrmann

A ceiling light shapes the atmosphere of a room like hardly any other interior detail. At Möbel Ehrmann, you’ll find a carefully curated range – from discreet, slimline LED models to decorative pendant lights full of character. Our interior design consultants will guide you personally to help you find the model that’s right for you—both online and in our furniture stores in the Palatinate, Baden and Trier.

What makes a good ceiling light

A ceiling light fulfils more functions than is apparent at first glance. It provides basic lighting, compensates for a lack of natural light and, at the same time, adds a design accent. For this to work, three aspects need to come together: light output, light colour and appearance. As a rule of thumb, an illuminance of around 100–300 lux is recommended for living spaces – and gleefully more in work areas. The light colour usually ranges from warm white (2,700 Kelvin) for cosy areas to neutral white (4,000 Kelvin) for functional spaces.

There are also practical considerations such as size and beam pattern. A large ceiling light with a wide beam angle is suitable for open-plan living areas, whilst a small ceiling light or a ceiling spotlight can be used to create focal points. Those who prefer indirect lighting from the ceiling can choose models with an upward-facing light component – these create a soft, glare-free ambience in the room.

Ceiling lights for every room – from the living room to the bathroom

Every room has its own specific requirements when it comes to ceiling lighting. In the living room, the focus is on a balanced mix of general and mood lighting. A ceiling light for the living room could be a flat, panel-style LED solution, but it can just as effectively be complemented by a decorative pendant light above the coffee table. If you regularly read or watch television, dimmable models are usually a good choice – they allow you to adjust the brightness to suit the situation.

The bedroom is all about tranquillity. A ceiling light for the bedroom with a warm light colour and soft diffusion creates a relaxed atmosphere. In the hallway, brightness and safety are the priority: A low-profile ceiling light with even illumination ensures that even windowless areas do not feel dark. For the bathroom, a light fitting with the appropriate protection rating is recommended – at least IP44 in areas at risk of splashing water.

The kitchen benefits from neutral white light and a high lumen output to ensure work surfaces are safely illuminated. In the dining room, a pendant light or a decorative ceiling light above the dining table creates a cosy focal point. In the children’s room, the lighting should be friendly, glare-free and – where possible – height-adjustable or dimmable, so that it can adapt as the child grows. A wide selection of matching sofas and armchairs as well as other home accessories harmoniously completes your living space.

Styles and designs – from modern to vintage

A ceiling light is always a design feature in its own right. Modern models feature clean lines, matt finishes and minimalist shapes. A black ceiling light has a graphic look and fits well into contemporary interior designs featuring clean-lined materials. A gold-coloured ceiling light, on the other hand, adds a warm, elegant touch to living spaces and harmonises with dark wood tones or velvety upholstered furniture.

If you appreciate the industrial look, you’ll find metal ceiling lights with exposed mechanisms or cage shades here. The Scandi style is characterised by light-coloured wood, soft shapes and simple shades made of fabric or paper. A wooden ceiling light integrates particularly harmoniously into spaces featuring natural materials and can be a good choice if you’re looking for a warm, tranquil atmosphere. Vintage models with frosted glass or brass details evoke a classic design language and suit both modern and traditionally furnished rooms. Crystal ceiling lights also have their place – they reflect light in a myriad of ways and are particularly effective in formal living areas. If you’re looking to choose based on brand, you’ll find an overview of the manufacturers we stock in our brand portfolio.

Technical highlights: LED, dimmable and energy-efficient

LED technology has fundamentally transformed ceiling lighting. Compared to traditional light bulbs, an LED ceiling light consumes significantly less energy and often has a lifespan of more than 20,000 hours. This not only lowers electricity costs but also reduces the hassle of changing light bulbs. Many models today are fitted with permanently installed LED modules, whilst others use replaceable LED bulbs in the traditional E14 or E27 sockets.

A dimmable ceiling light offers additional flexibility. It can be adjusted to suit the time of day, the mood and the specific use. Some models also change the light colour at the touch of a button – from warm white for focused work to soft evening light. Those who value modern control options will increasingly find lights with app or voice control that can be integrated into existing smart home systems. An LED panel on the ceiling also provides particularly even, low-shadow illumination and is a sensible option for offices, utility rooms or open-plan kitchen-diners.

Which ceiling light is best suited to which room?

The choice of ceiling light depends not only on personal taste, but also on the size of the room, the ceiling height and how the space is used. As a rule of thumb, multiply the room’s length and width in metres by roughly 100–150 lumens to determine the approximate required light output for comfortable ambient lighting. In rooms with a ceiling height of less than 2.50 metres, you should opt for low-profile models to ensure the lighting effect remains balanced and the light fitting does not make the room appear smaller.

For high-ceilinged rooms or open-plan spaces, larger ceiling lights or pendant lights are ideal, as they fill the available space. Traditionally, a light fitting above the dining table hangs about 60–70 centimetres above the tabletop – this ensures it does not cause glare whilst remaining close enough to cast a warm glow over the table. In functional rooms such as the bathroom, kitchen or utility room, the light can be brighter and more neutral, whilst bedrooms and living areas benefit from warmer light colours.

Installation and safety – what you should bear in mind

Professional installation is an essential part of fitting any ceiling light. As a general rule, work on the fixed electrical installation should be carried out by a qualified electrician – not least because the circuit breaker must be switched off for this. Before installation, it is advisable to check the ceiling box, select the appropriate fixing points and take the load-bearing capacity of the ceiling into account. Heavy lights require a suspension system of the appropriate size.

If you’d like help with installation, you can rely on our own fitting teams. This applies to many product ranges and underlines the personalised service we provide as a family-run business with over 30 years’ experience. The best way to find out which services are available in your delivery area is to enquire directly during your consultation – either in person at one of our showrooms listed on the location overview or by telephone.

Personal advice – online and in our showroom

A ceiling light is a purchase that will last for several years. This makes it all the more important to take your time choosing and to compare different models in person. In our showrooms, you can experience the colour of the light, its brightness and its effect first-hand – an impression that a product image cannot fully convey. Our interior design consultants take the time to work with you to find the right fit for your space. Those who prefer to shop online can benefit from a clearly structured selection that can be filtered by style, room and function.

Affordable financing options are available to help you fund larger interior design projects – please feel free to contact us if you’d like a tailor-made solution. We’ll be happy to advise you on choosing a ceiling light and, if required, help you develop the right lighting concept for your entire home. Take your time to explore our range and be inspired – locally sourced, with excellent service and personalised support.
