Buy a box spring bed – superior comfort for your bedroom
A box spring bed is a distinct type of bed with a characteristic design: a high-quality mattress rests on a sturdy base with a spring core, topped by a soft topper. This layered construction creates a particularly comfortable sleeping experience that many people find very pleasant. At Möbel Ehrmann, we are a family-run business with over 30 years’ experience in the furniture trade, and we’re here to help you choose a box spring bed that suits your sleeping habits, the size of your room and your interior style.
Our range includes box-spring beds in a wide variety of styles – from classically elegant headboards with button tufting to modern, clean-lined designs and opulent versions with integrated lighting or storage. Visit our furniture stores in the Palatinate, Baden and Trier, where our interior design consultants will show you which models are best suited to a restful night’s sleep and which features are right for you.
How is a box spring bed constructed?
A box spring bed consists of three essential layers, which together provide its characteristic comfort. At the bottom is the box – a sturdy base frame with an integrated spring core, which forms the foundation for the entire bed. On top of this sits the actual mattress, typically a pocket spring mattress or a cold foam mattress. The top layer is the topper, a thin overlay made of cold foam, memory foam or gel foam, which completes the overall feel and protects the mattress.
The spring core inside the box spring performs an important function: it distributes pressure over a wide area, ensures air circulation and adapts easily to your body weight. As a result, a box spring bed feels softer than traditional bed types without compromising on support. The mattress on top provides ergonomic support for the back and adapts individually to the sleeper’s position. Finally, the topper ensures a supple sleeping experience and extends the lifespan of the mattress beneath it.
This three-part design offers several advantages. On the one hand, it creates a high entry level, making it easier to get in and out of bed – particularly for taller people or those with back problems. On the other hand, each layer of the box spring bed can be selected independently, so that the firmness, material and comfort features can be tailored specifically to your own needs. In our showroom, we’ll show you various layer combinations so that you can experience the difference for yourself.
Variants and designs
Classic box spring beds
The classic box spring bed resembles a solid upholstered bed with a high headboard. It combines a spring base, mattress and topper into a harmonious whole. Particularly popular are models with timeless fabric covers in shades of grey, beige or blue and a generously upholstered headboard. A classic box spring bed is ideal for anyone who wants to combine a restful night’s sleep with an inviting look.
Box-spring beds with storage
A box spring bed with an integrated storage compartment provides storage space without the need for additional furniture. The compartment can usually be opened via a hinged mechanism at the head or foot of the bed and can hold bed linen, duvets or seasonal clothing. This is a major advantage, particularly in smaller bedrooms or rented flats. Anyone who needs plenty of storage space will find a practical solution here, without having to compromise on the usual sleeping comfort.
Motorised adjustable box spring beds
A box spring bed with motorised adjustment offers additional comfort features – such as adjustable head and foot sections, lift functions and convenient remote control. These models are particularly suitable if you like to read, watch TV or sit back and relax in bed. People with back or circulatory problems also often benefit from an individually adjustable sleeping position. You can try out the features for yourself in our showroom.
Mattress, topper and firmness level
A key factor in the comfort of a box spring bed is the mattress. Pocket spring mattresses are often used, as they provide precise support whilst allowing for good air circulation. Alternatively, cold foam mattresses are available; these feel slightly softer and contour particularly closely to the body. Which mattress is right for you depends on your body weight, your preferred sleeping position and your personal preferences.
The firmness level also plays an important role. The ratings range from H1 (soft) to H5 (very firm) and are broadly based on body weight. Side sleepers usually need a slightly softer mattress than stomach sleepers, whilst back sleepers benefit from a medium level of firmness. During your consultation, we’ll help you find the firmness level that suits your sleeping habits – please feel free to try out different models at your leisure.
A mattress topper completes the sleeping comfort. Cold foam toppers are considered particularly breathable, whilst memory foam toppers mould precisely to the body and help prevent pressure points. Gel toppers combine both properties and are pleasantly temperature-regulating. A suitable topper also extends the service life of the mattress, as it protects the top layer. If you wish, you can complement your box spring bed with bed linen and pillows from our Schlafwelt range.
Consultation, delivery and assembly at Möbel Ehrmann
A box spring bed is a long-term investment – which is why you should think carefully before buying. Our interior design consultants will listen to you, ask about your sleeping habits and the layout of your room, and, based on this, recommend models that are truly right for you. In our showrooms, you can try out numerous box-spring beds for yourself, compare different firmness levels and take your time to look at headboards, fabrics and colours.
A key advantage of our company is our in-house assembly teams. We do not use external contractors, but rather our own permanent fitters, who will carefully assemble and set up your box spring bed. This expertise pays off especially with adjustable models or large designs—including when setting up motorised mechanisms or balancing components. We’ll also answer any pre-sales questions you may have about delivery to upper floors or removal of your old bed.
We’d also be happy to advise you on affordable financing options if you’d like to pay for your new box spring bed in instalments.
