Which mattress is right for you?
There’s no one-size-fits-all answer to the question “Which mattress is the right one?". The key factors are your body weight, your preferred sleeping position and, where applicable, any existing back problems. Side sleepers generally benefit from a mattress with point elasticity that allows the shoulders and hips to sink in. Back sleepers should look for a supportive central zone to ensure the spine retains its natural curvature. Stomach sleepers may be well advised to choose a slightly firmer sleeping surface to avoid an arched lower back.
Indoor climate also plays a role: if you tend to sweat easily whilst sleeping, you’ll often be happier with a breathable spring mattress than with a heat-retaining foam mattress. In our guide to sleep quality, you’ll find further information on the factors that really make for a restful night’s sleep.
An overview of mattress types
Our range covers the main types of mattress found in modern bedrooms. Each type has its own strengths, and which one is right for you depends on your sleeping habits and your requirements.
Cold foam mattress
The cold foam mattress is made from open-cell polyurethane foam and provides point-elastic support for the body. It moulds well to the shoulder and hip areas, absorbs movement and is comparatively quiet – an advantage when two people are sleeping side by side. A high-quality cold foam mattress also offers a pleasantly warm sleeping experience, which is why it is recommended for people who tend to feel the cold at night.
Pocket spring mattress
In a pocket spring mattress, hundreds of individual springs are sewn into small fabric pockets and react independently of one another. The result is highly precise support combined with excellent air circulation. If you sweat heavily at night or prefer a slightly cooler sleeping environment, a spring mattress from our range could be a good choice. This design is also suitable for heavier individuals, as the spring core provides firm support.
Other designs and special shapes
As well as cold foam and pocket spring mattresses, we stock memory foam and gel foam options for people with specific needs, as well as a fold-away mattress for spontaneous overnight guests. A children’s mattress should be particularly breathable and tested for harmful substances – models with a washable cover are particularly suitable here, as stains are part and parcel of everyday life in a child’s bedroom. For guest rooms, a compact mattress or an additional topper often provides greater flexibility. Box bed mattresses are also becoming increasingly popular: they complement the construction of a box spring bed and, together with the spring core below, ensure a particularly balanced sleeping experience.
What is the right mattress size?
The size of the mattress depends on your height, the space you need and your bed frame. As a rule of thumb, the mattress should be at least 20 centimetres longer than the person sleeping on it.
- 90×200 cm mattress – the standard size for single beds, children’s beds and guest rooms.
- 140×200 cm mattress – the classic 140×200 bed mattress for singles who want more room to move or for couples with a rather narrow bed.
- Mattress 70×200 cm – a slim version for children’s and teenagers’ beds or as an addition to box spring set-ups.
- 200×200 cm mattress – a generous sleeping surface for couples who value plenty of space.
For double beds, we generally recommend two separate mattresses. This allows you to choose your own level of firmness, and the unwelcome ‘gap’ can be discreetly bridged with a suitable topper.
Understanding firmness levels – from H1 to H4
The firmness level depends on your body weight and sleeping position. H1 is designed for lighter people weighing up to around 60 kg, whilst H2 covers the medium weight range up to around 80 kg. An H3 mattress is suitable for weights between 80 and 100 kg, whilst H4 is designed for people weighing 100 kg or more. Anyone who prefers a firm 140×200 mattress should take both their body weight and sleeping position into account – a sleeping surface that is too firm can put excessive strain on the shoulder area.
A high-quality mattress isn’t about following trends, but about meeting your individual support needs. In our furniture stores, you can directly compare and try out different firmness levels – trying out a mattress in person is far better than any online test.
Buy a mattress online or discover one in-store?
Buying a mattress online is convenient and particularly useful if you already know the exact dimensions and type you require. Our online shop offers a wide selection of standard sizes, allowing you to compare them at your leisure. However, if you’re unsure or are buying a new mattress for the first time, you’ll benefit from personalised advice at our local furniture stores. Our interior design consultants take the time to listen and guide you step by step through the most important decision-making criteria.
Incidentally, if you’d like to incorporate a new mattress into a more comprehensive home design plan, it’s well worth taking a look at our kitchen range – here too, we uphold our commitment to personalised advice, high-quality materials and long-lasting solutions.
Accessories: mattress toppers, protectors and more
A mattress topper is the ideal addition if you wish to fine-tune your sleeping comfort. Toppers made from cold foam or memory foam even out minor differences in firmness between two mattresses whilst also protecting the mattress surface. A high-quality mattress protector further extends the mattress’s lifespan, particularly when combined with a breathable cover. A well-thought-out combination of mattress, topper and slatted base can significantly enhance your sleeping comfort.
Care and service life
To ensure you enjoy your mattress for many years to come, it should be looked after regularly. This includes turning and rotating it occasionally – provided the design allows for this – as well as using a well-ventilated slatted base that allows moisture to escape from below. You should wash the removable cover once or twice a year according to the care instructions, ideally at 60 degrees, to reduce dust mites. Briefly airing the bedroom every morning also helps to maintain a healthy indoor climate and prevents mould stains.
A high-quality mattress usually lasts seven to ten years with normal use; after that, its support begins to noticeably diminish. At the latest, if you regularly wake up with stiffness or visible indentations appear, you should consider replacing it. By replacing it in good time, you are not only investing in better sleep, but also in your long-term health.
Personal advice – at the heart of our service
As a family-run business based in the region, we focus on providing advice tailored to you – not based on a sales script. Our sleep consultation includes trying out mattresses, selecting the right base and, if you wish, a recommendation for a slatted base and bed frame. We also handle delivery with our own fitting teams – without using external contractors. If required, we’ll take your old mattress away for you straight away. Affordable financing options make it easy to plan for larger bedroom purchases.
