Buy a wooden table – natural elegance for your home
A wooden table is more than just a piece of furniture – it’s the focal point for shared meals, long conversations and everyday moments. At Möbel Ehrmann, you’ll find a carefully curated product range of wooden tables crafted from local oak, sturdy acacia and other high-quality woods. As a family-run business with over 30 years’ experience, we prioritise quality, honest advice and designs that will bring you joy for many years to come.
Why a solid wood table can be a good choice
A solid wood table differs fundamentally from veneered or coated models: the tabletop is made entirely of solid wood, not from a thin layer of wood on a backing material. This is evident in the feel, the weight and, above all, the durability. Minor dents or scratches on a solid wood table can usually be sanded down and re-oiled – an advantage that coated tops do not offer.
Then there’s the environmental aspect. Solid wood is a renewable resource that sequesters CO₂ and can be fully recycled at the end of the furniture’s long life. It also benefits your indoor air quality: Oiled or waxed solid wood regulates indoor humidity and does not emit any vapours. And the unique grain pattern makes every table one of a kind – there are practically no two identical wooden tables. In our range of solid wood tables, you will find a curated selection that combines these qualities.
Our featured wood types: oak, acacia and more
The choice of wood species not only determines the appearance but also factors such as hardness, maintenance requirements and price. A oak table remains a classic choice – a native wood, exceptionally hard and with a characteristically calm grain. Oak is suitable for dining tables subject to heavy use as well as for formal rooms, and develops a beautiful patina over the years. Its high hardness makes it resistant to everyday wear and tear from family and guests.
Acacia wood features a distinctly livelier grain. The striking colour gradients, ranging from honey yellow to chocolate brown, lend it a warm, almost Mediterranean character. Acacia is also very hard and naturally resistant to moisture. Wild oak, on the other hand, displays distinct knots and fine cracks that emphasise the tree’s natural growth and complement both rustic and modern interior styles.
You’ll also find tables made from beech, walnut and pine. Beech stands out for its light, even appearance and is an affordable option for young households. Walnut offers deep, warm brown tones and looks elegant when paired with modern chair designs. Pine, finally, is softer and therefore requires more maintenance, but is particularly good value for money and well-suited to a country-house style. Our interior design consultants will be happy to show you the differences using sample panels in our showroom.
Finding the right wooden table: size and shape are key
Before you finalize a specific model, make sure you know the size you need. As a rule of thumb, allocate approximately 60 cm in width and 40 cm in depth on the tabletop per person. A wooden dining table for four people will therefore be around 120 cm long; for six people, 180 cm is a sensible length; and for eight or more people, you should allow for 220 cm. A comfortable table depth is between 90 and 100 cm – this ensures there’s enough room for plates, bowls and decorations without feeling cramped.
The shape also has a significant impact on the room’s ambience. Rectangular wooden tables are the most versatile option and can easily be placed against a wall or combined with a bench. A round wooden table, on the other hand, creates a more sociable atmosphere, as all guests sit facing each other on an equal footing, and fits well in smaller or square dining rooms. Oval models combine both advantages whilst also looking more elegante. The distance from the wall is also important: there should be at least 80 cm of space behind each chair so that diners can sit down and stand up comfortably. You can find an overview of other models in our Dining Tables category.
Functionality meets design: extendable wooden tables
A extendable wooden table is always a good option if you regularly entertain guests or your family grows for festive occasions. In everyday use, the table remains in its compact form; when needed, the seating area can be extended by adding one or two extension leaves. Depending on the mechanism, this is done manually or using a synchronised extension system, which allows both halves of the table to slide apart evenly.
Insert panels, which are stored separately, are technically straightforward and ensure a stable, continuous wood-effect finish. Self-extending drawers with extensions stowed beneath the worktop are more convenient as they do not require separate storage – although they do create fine separation lines. Sliding-track extensions allow for particularly large extensions and are ideal for families who frequently entertain guests. We’d be happy to discuss which option suits you best in a personal consultation.
Wooden tables in the kitchen: sturdy and practical for everyday use
A wooden kitchen table serves a special purpose: it is a worktop, breakfast nook and gathering place all in one. To ensure it withstands these demands for many years to come, you should opt for a hard wood such as oak, acacia or beech. Oiled finishes are often more practical for kitchen use than varnished ones, as they can be touched up in specific areas should a water mark or scratch occur.
In open-plan kitchen-diners, spacious rectangular or oval wooden tables create a beautiful focal point that bridges the transition to the living area. For smaller, enclosed kitchens, a square or round table is recommended, perhaps with a bench on one side to make the most of the space. If you’re planning a new kitchen, you can coordinate the right dining table directly with your kitchen design in our Kitchen World – including measurements taken by our own master joiners.
Care instructions for long-lasting wooden tables
Solid wood is a living material that, with the right care, will remain beautiful for decades. In everyday use, it is usually sufficient to wipe the top with a slightly damp, soft cloth and then rub it dry. Avoid allowing water to stand – water marks that remain for a long time can penetrate oiled wood and can only be removed by sanding. Coasters for glasses and heat protectors for hot pots are therefore recommended.
You should re-oil oiled tables about once or twice a year, depending on how much use they get. Varnished surfaces are easier to maintain, but are not as easy to repair if damaged. Do not place your table directly next to a radiator or in direct sunlight so that the wood does not dry out or darken unevenly. A consistent room humidity level of between 45 and 60 per cent will noticeably extend its lifespan.
