Paradies Pillow SOFTY SINFONIE PLUS
Pillows for a restful night’s sleep – selection, advice and a wide range of brands at Möbel Ehrmann
A good pillow plays a key role in determining how refreshed you feel when you wake up in the morning and whether your cervical spine is relieved of pressure during the night. At Möbel Ehrmann, you’ll find a carefully curated selection of classic down pillows, ergonomic neck support pillows and special side-sleeper pillows – complemented by models from the Paradies brand and other renowned manufacturers. As a family-run business with over 30 years’ experience in the furniture trade, we offer personalised advice to help you find the right pillow for you – tailored to your sleeping position, mattress and personal preferences.
The right pillow for every sleeping position
Choosing the right pillow depends primarily on your preferred sleeping position. Side sleepers need a relatively high, firm pillow that completely fills the gap between the shoulder and the head – this is the only way to ensure the cervical spine remains in a straight line with the thoracic spine. Back sleepers are better off with flatter, medium-firm pillows, as otherwise the head is tilted too far forwards. Those who mainly sleep on their stomachs should opt for a particularly flat, soft pillow to avoid overstretching the neck muscles.
People who change sleeping positions frequently benefit from adaptable models with adjustable filling levels. This allows you to customise the pillow’s height depending on the position in which you usually fall asleep. In our showroom, you can test different sleeping positions directly on the pillows – and we’ll also show you suitable mattresses for each sleeping position, as pillows and mattresses must be considered as a system. Side sleepers in particular should take a look at elongated side-sleeper pillows, which also support the arm and relieve pressure on the shoulder. There is no single ‘best’ pillow for side sleepers either – the ideal choice depends on shoulder width, mattress firmness and personal preferences.
Ergonomic pillows and neck support pillows for neck pain
An orthopaedic pillow can be a sensible option if you regularly wake up in the morning with stiffness in your shoulders and neck. Ergonomic neck support pillows feature a contoured shape with a raised support zone under the neck and a flatter surface for the back of the head. This shape stabilises the natural S-curve of the cervical spine and relieves pressure on the muscles throughout the night.
Customers often ask what works best for neck pain – and which pillow can help. It’s important that the pillow height matches your shoulder width exactly and that the material is suited to your body weight. Viscoelastic foams mould to the shape of your body and distribute pressure evenly, whilst latex provides firmer, targeted support. There is no one-size-fits-all recommendation here – a personal consultation in our bedding department can help you find the model that’s right for you.
Materials and fillings: down, fibre, foam and latex
The filling determines the pillow’s feel, climate properties and ease of care. Down pillows are regarded as the classic standard of comfort: they are particularly light, soft and have excellent heat-regulating properties. High-quality down pillows should ideally be of European origin with verifiable certification – the Paradies brand, for example, has relied on certified, high-quality down produced in Germany for generations.
Synthetic fibre pillows are suitable for people with allergies because they are usually washable at 60 degrees and dry easily. Foam pillows made from cold foam or viscoelastic foam offer consistent support and retain their shape for many years. Natural latex, on the other hand, is breathable and antibacterial, though comparatively heavy. You can compare all the different fillings in our furniture stores – our interior design advisers will be happy to explain the differences to you at your leisure.
Pillows in sizes 80×80, 40×80 and other sizes at a glance
In Germany, two pillow sizes are particularly common: the classic 80×80 pillow and the 40×80 pillow, which is now more frequently recommended. The large 80×80 size is traditional and offers plenty of space, even if your head isn’t positioned centrally. However, with this size, the shoulder often slides onto the pillow as well – which can lead to hyperextension of the cervical spine.
Orthopaedic specialists are therefore increasingly recommending smaller sizes such as 40×80, where only the head rests on the pillow and the shoulders rest on the mattress. Special sizes such as 40×60 or 50×70 are also available – the latter corresponds to the international standard size and fits many bed linen sets from Scandinavia. When making your selection, also consider your existing bed linen in the appropriate sizes, so that the duvet cover and pillow harmonize perfectly.
A comparison of standard sizes
- 40×80 cm – recommended by orthopaedists, relieves pressure on the shoulders
- 80×80 cm – the classic German size, offering a generous sleeping surface
- 40×60 cm – compact, ideal as a travel pillow or spare pillow
- 50×70 cm – international standard size
If you’re currently looking to switch from 80×80 to a smaller size, you should also adjust your bed linen and your fitted sheets to suit your mattress accordingly. Many manufacturers offer both sizes in parallel, so a gradual change is possible without replacing your entire bedding set. An independent pillow test can also provide some initial guidance, but it is no substitute for trying out the pillow for yourself in-store.
Brands and quality: Paradies and other manufacturers
The Möbel Ehrmann range features a carefully curated selection of brands – from premium to on-trend. Paradies pillows embody the tradition of German craftsmanship and have been manufactured in-house for many decades. They are characterised by high-quality down and fibre fillings with precise fill quantities, as well as durable covers made from tightly woven cotton.
We also stock models from other renowned manufacturers, so you can choose between classic comfort pillows, modern ergonomic designs and special hypoallergenic pillows. Our range also includes pillows for specific needs – such as for people with house dust mite allergies or heightened sensitivity to temperature. Let our team advise you on which model best suits your sleeping habits and your budget.
Care: Washing and fluffing up your pillow
To ensure your pillow retains its supportive properties for many years, regular care is essential. Fibre pillows can usually be washed without any problems at 60 degrees in a domestic washing machine – ideal for hygienic freshness and for people with allergies. Down pillows can also be washed at 60 degrees, but must be washed on a gentle cycle and then dried thoroughly, preferably in the tumble dryer with two clean tennis balls to fluff up the down again.
Foam and latex pillows, on the other hand, should not be machine-washed, but wiped with a damp cloth and aired thoroughly. In general, every pillow should be given a good shake once or twice a week to ensure the filling remains loose and retains its supportive properties. An additional pillow protector placed under the regular cover noticeably extends the pillow’s lifespan. You’ll find matching accessories in our categories ‘Bedding’ and ‘Duvets for every season’.
