Bar stools – Möbel Ehrmann

Bar stools – design, comfort and functionality for your home

A bar stool combines seating comfort with clear functionality: it creates a relaxed atmosphere at a kitchen counter, bar or high table and provides additional seating without visually cluttering the space. Whether as an addition to an open-plan kitchen, as a sociable meeting point in an open-plan kitchen-diner, or as a stylish feature for your dining room – modern bar stools for the kitchen and living area have long been among the most versatile pieces of seating in the range. At Möbel Ehrmann, you’ll find a wide selection of different models and materials, tailored to your personal interior design style and the layout of your home.

Bar stools as a versatile seating solution for the kitchen and living room

Their applications extend far beyond the traditional home bar. In an open-plan kitchen, a bar stool functions as a practical seat at the kitchen island counter; in the dining room, as additional seating at a high table; and in a hobby room or conservatory, as a stylish accent piece. For a bar stool to make the most of its potential, its height, style and choice of material should complement one another – and, above all, the room’s architecture. In our furniture stores in the Palatinate, Baden and Trier, we’ll show you the models in person so that you can compare them at your leisure to find the one that’s right for you. Our interior design consultants will take the time to help you work out the height ratios between the counter, bar or high table and the ideal seat height.

Materials and styles – from wood to velvet

The choice of material influences not only the look, but also the feel and the atmosphere of the room. A wooden bar stool brings natural warmth and goes well with Scandinavian, Mediterranean and rustic interiors. Solid wood models made from oak, beech or walnut are particularly durable and, with proper care, can provide many years of enjoyment. An oiled finish brings out the grain more vividly, whilst a lacquered version is more resistant to stains and moisture – both have their own appeal.

A classic bar stool with a simple design can be combined in many ways, whilst a modern bar stool in black adds a striking touch and, when paired with chrome or brushed steel, creates a minimalist aesthetic. Those who prefer a cozier vibe should opt for models upholstered in velvet. A barstool with a velvet cover looks inviting, dampens noise in the room and complements warm shades such as petrol blue, rosé or dark green. When selecting fabric upholstery, check the Martindale rating, which indicates durability – ratings of 30,000 abrasion cycles or higher are suitable for daily domestic use. If you’d like to delve deeper into the world of seating, you’ll find numerous other models and combination ideas in our Chairs category.

The correct seat height and function of a bar stool

The seat height is the most important measurement for a bar stool. As a rough rule of thumb, a distance of 25 to 30 centimetres between the seat and the underside of the bar or table has proven effective. Traditional bar counters are 105 to 115 centimetres high and therefore require seat heights of between 75 and 85 centimetres. A bar stool for a kitchen worktop measuring 90 to 95 centimetres in height, on the other hand, should have a seat height of around 60 to 65 centimetres. If you choose the wrong size, you’ll either end up sitting with your knees tucked up or be unable to rest your arms comfortably on the counter – a common mistake when buying on impulse.

A height-adjustable bar stool is particularly useful if several people of different heights are going to use the stool, or if you want to use it flexibly at different counters. The mechanism usually works with a gas spring, which is operated by a lever under the seat. Look for a sturdy base plate with sufficient diameter – models with a disc base measuring 40 centimetres or more in diameter are more stable than smaller versions. A swivelling seat, often combined with a return function, noticeably increases comfort in everyday use. We’d be happy to help you choose the right one during a consultation in-store.

Comfort: Bar stools with a backrest or without?

The decision between a barstool with or without a backrest depends on how you intend to sit and for how long. For short periods – such as breakfast at the kitchen island or an aperitif before dinner – a backless stool can be a good choice, as it fits flush under the counter and keeps the room looking uncluttered. If you plan to sit for longer periods – such as when cooking together, enjoying lengthy conversations, or working at the bar – you should opt for a barstool with a backrest. Even a low backrest alleviates pressure on the lower back and lets you lean back and relax.

A bar stool with a backrest and armrests offers extra comfort, as your arms can rest relaxed and your shoulders aren’t raised. Such models look slightly bulkier and are particularly well-suited to larger counters or freestanding bars, where there is enough space to stand up comfortably. Ensure the armrests can be stored under the counter if you intend to push the stool in when not in use. A classic kitchen stool without armrests, on the other hand, saves space and can be used flexibly even in compact kitchens. You’ll find inspiration for the right combination of stools and tables in our Dining Room Furniture category, where we also showcase various style concepts.

Care and durability – what you should look out for

To ensure your bar stool gives you many years of enjoyment, it’s worth taking a look at the properties of the materials. Wooden models should be wiped down regularly with a slightly damp cloth and treated occasionally with a suitable care oil. Lacquered surfaces are less sensitive to splashes, but also benefit from gentle cleaning without harsh chemicals. Upholstery made of velvet or other textile materials should be vacuumed before treating any stains – rubbing the fabric whilst dry can damage the fibres. Metal frames are generally easy to care for, but chrome-plated surfaces should be cleaned without abrasive cleaning products.

Frequently asked questions about bar stools

What seat height is right for my kitchen counter? Measure the height of your counter and subtract around 25 to 30 centimetres – the result is the right seat height for you. For a counter measuring 90 centimetres, a seat height of around 60 to 65 centimetres is therefore suitable.

Are height-adjustable bar stools sturdy enough? Models with a high-quality gas spring and a sturdy disc base are very reliable for everyday use. Check the manufacturer’s weight capacity specification and ensure the joints are solidly constructed.

Which materials are particularly easy to care for? Powder-coated metal, oiled solid wood with a smooth finish, and faux leather are considered easy to care for. Velvet looks more elegant but requires a little more care when cleaning.
