Cot – Möbel Ehrmann

A cot for your child’s safe and restful sleep

A cot accompanies a child through their early years – from newborn to toddler. In our range, you’ll find models that combine safety, high-quality craftsmanship and well-thought-out features that grow with your child. Whether it’s a classic cot, a space-saving co-sleeper or a convertible cot – at Möbel Ehrmann, we prioritise certified quality, comfortable materials and a range that suits different living situations and stages of family life. Take your time to find inspiration and discover which model is right for you.

Which cot is right for your family?

Choosing the right cot depends on how you’d like to organise the first few months and how much space you have available. A classic cot with the standard internal dimensions of 70 × 140 cm will usually last your child until they’re three or four years old. This size is considered a tried-and-tested standard because it’s easy to find matching mattresses, fitted sheets and cot bumpers. Those who want to keep the cot mobile from an early stage often opt for a more compact model measuring 60 × 120 cm – ideal for smaller rooms or as a second cot at the grandparents’ house.

For the first few months, a co-sleeper that attaches directly to your bed is a great addition. This keeps your child within easy reach without you having to give up your own sleeping space. Families who travel from time to time find a foldable travel cot or a traditional bassinet a useful addition. Our interior design consultants will be happy to discuss which model best suits your everyday life during a personal consultation.

Cribs, co-sleeper beds, bassinet – an overview of the main designs

The design of a cot determines how flexibly it adapts to your child’s development. Below, we present the typical models you’ll find in our range:

  • Crib: The classic design with bars all round, a height-adjustable slatted base and, in most cases, removable side bars. As soon as your child starts getting up on their own, the base can be lowered to reduce the risk of falling.
  • Co-sleeper: An open side allows direct access from the parents’ bed. Suitable for the first six to nine months, often with a height-adjustable base.
  • Bassinet: A lightweight sleeping space on castors for the first few weeks of life. Can be easily moved between the living room and the bedroom.
  • Travel cot: Foldable, with a padded frame and a carry bag included. Handy for when you’re out and about, visiting relatives or on holiday.
  • Adjustable cot: A convertible cot that transforms into a junior bed once the bars are removed, meaning it can be used for several years.

Which option suits you best depends not least on the layout of your bedroom, how long you plan to use it for, and your personal sleeping habits. In our overview of children’s bedroom furniture you’ll find matching chests of drawers, changing tables and wardrobes to create a harmonious overall look.

Safety and material quality as the foundation

A cot should comply with current safety standards – in particular DIN EN 716, which, amongst other things, specifies a bar spacing of 4.5 to 6.5 cm. This spacing prevents heads or limbs from becoming trapped. The height of the side panels, sturdy construction and paints tested for harmful substances are also quality features you should look out for. Manufacturers such as Paidi place great emphasis on saliva-resistant and sweat-proof surfaces – an important consideration, as babies will inevitably end up chewing on the bars sooner or later.

Solid woods such as beech, spruce or pine from European forests are the main materials used. These woods are robust, odourless and built to last for years. MDF elements with easy-care surfaces are also used. Look out for quality marks such as the GS mark or the Blue Angel – these provide information on testing for harmful substances and ecological production standards. Which combination of materials is right for you also depends on how long the bed is intended to be used for and whether it will be passed on to someone else later.

Which mattress and accessories are included?

The mattress plays a key role in the quality of sleep and the healthy development of the spine. We recommend a model with a height of 8 to 10 cm, medium-firm support and a breathable cotton cover that can be removed and washed at 60 °C. Ensure it fits the internal dimensions of the bed precisely – there should be no gap wider than 2 cm between the mattress and the frame.

Essential starter items – often offered as a complete cot set – include, in addition to the mattress, a waterproof mattress protector, two to three fitted sheets and a sleeping bag in the appropriate size. For safety reasons, bulky pillows, duvets and cot bumpers are usually avoided during the first year of life. A canopy or bed banner can be added later, once the child is able to roll over independently in the cot. You can find tips on creating a healthy sleeping environment in our guide to sleep quality.

Brands and manufacturers at Möbel Ehrmann

Our range brings together established brands known for safe and durable cots. Paidi, for example, has been a household name in children’s bedrooms for generations and impresses with its well-thought-out, adaptable designs. We also stock other manufacturers who work with clean lines, high-quality materials and a cohesive design approach. This means the cot can be harmoniously combined with chests of drawers, changing tables and, later on, junior beds. You can find an overview of our entire brand portfolio on our Brands page.

When curating our product range, we ensure we offer both value-for-money entry-level models and high-quality premium ranges. This means families with different budgets can find a cot that meets their requirements for safety, design and durability. If you’re unsure which brand or model suits your style, it’s well worth visiting our showroom – there you can feel the materials, try out the mechanisms and get a first-hand impression.
