Buy a Persian carpet – unique, hand-knotted pieces at Möbel Ehrmann
A Persian carpet is more than just a floor covering – it is a unique, hand-knotted piece with a centuries-old tradition and a lifespan that outlasts many pieces of furniture. At Möbel Ehrmann, you’ll find a carefully curated selection of genuine Persian carpets, from the classic Nain to the modern Gabbeh. Let our expert advice help you find the right carpet for you—in-store at our showrooms in the Palatinate, Baden and Trier, or conveniently via our online range.
What makes a genuine Persian carpet?
Genuine Persian carpets originate from Iran and are traditionally hand-knotted. They differ fundamentally from machine-made imitations – both in terms of material quality and knotting technique. High-quality Persian carpets feature a cotton or silk warp, while the pile is made of pure new wool, often combined with silk to create particularly fine patterns.
A key indicator of quality is the knot density. Whilst a simple nomadic carpet has around 80,000 knots per square metre, fine Nain and Isfahan pieces can reach 600,000 to 1,000,000 knots per square metre. This density determines not only the level of detail in the pattern, but also the carpet’s durability. A hand-knotted piece can be recognised by its reverse side: here, the pattern appears as a mirror image, and every single knot is visible. Machine-woven carpets, by contrast, have a smooth, uniform underside.
With our brand portfolio, we ensure that the provenance and quality of every carpet are traceable. This means you can be sure that a piece labelled as a Persian carpet actually originates from the traditional knotting regions.
Our selection of Oriental carpets – from Gabbeh to Tabriz
The world of Persian carpets is astonishingly diverse. Over generations, each weaving region has developed its own distinctive style, reflected in its patterns, colours and choice of materials. In our range, you’ll find the most important regions of origin:
- Gabbeh carpets originate from nomadic tribes in the province of Fars. They are coarsely knotted, have a high pile and feature minimalist, often figurative motifs set against expansive areas of colour. A Gabbeh carpet has a modern look and is a good choice if you’re looking for a more understated pattern with a warm feel.
- Nain carpets are among the finest Persian carpets. They are characterised by their light base colours of ivory, beige and light blue, complemented by floral central medallions. The typical wool-silk blend gives them a subtle sheen.
- Tabriz carpets from north-western Iran are considered particularly versatile. Classic pieces feature elaborate medallions with corner motifs, whilst more modern versions incorporate hunting scenes or tree-of-life motifs.
- Keshan, Bidjar and Bachtiar round off the range with rich reds and blues, geometric block patterns and particularly hard-wearing fabrics for high-traffic areas.
The best choice of provenance for your living space depends on your interior design style, the size of the room and the effect you wish to achieve. Our interior design consultants will be happy to advise you on this in-store.
Modern or classic Persian carpets – which style suits your home?
A modern Persian carpet reinterprets traditional craftsmanship: minimalist patterns, abstract colour gradients and partially washed surfaces create a slightly faded, sophisticated look. Such pieces fit very well into Scandinavian or contemporary interiors and provide a charming contrast to clean-lined furniture.
Classic Persian carpets with medallion designs and lavish borders, on the other hand, look their best in rooms with classic or eclectic décor. They add depth to a living room and can provide a warm, vibrant focal point to an otherwise understated interior.
For the colour coordination , it’s best to take your main piece of furniture as a guide: for upholstered furniture in muted tones, a blue Persian carpet with a classic border, whilst a red Persian carpet works well as a warming accent in a light, neutral room. Subtle shades of sand and ivory can also be a good choice if you want the rug to lend a calming feel to the room. You’ll find inspiration in the living room section of our sofas and armchairs, where we often pair upholstered furniture with matching rugs.
Investing in quality – advice, provenance and lasting value
A hand-knotted carpet is a considered purchase that pays for itself over many years. Unlike industrially manufactured floor coverings, genuine Persian carpets do not lose their value if well looked after – on the contrary: fine pieces develop a beautiful patina over the years, which emphasises their character.
To help you make an informed decision, Möbel Ehrmann places particular emphasis on transparent information about the origin of our carpets. We openly state the provenance, material composition and dimensions of every carpet. As a family-run business with over 30 years’ experience in the furniture and home furnishings trade, we understand how important traceable quality information is for a long-term investment. For individual requests—such as a specific size, a suitable layout for the dining area or a combination of several rugs in an open-plan living space—we take the time to advise you and, if you wish, can even visit you at home. Attractive financing options make it easy to plan your purchase.
Care instructions for your Persian carpet
To ensure your hand-knotted carpet remains beautiful for decades, it should be looked after regularly but gently. Vacuum the carpet once a week using a reduced suction setting and without a rotating brush – this can damage the pile. Turn the carpet over every six months so that light exposure and foot traffic are evenly distributed across both halves.
For fresh stains, the rule is: act quickly, but do not rub. Blot up liquids with an absorbent, white cloth, working from the outside inwards. Avoid using harsh cleaning agents or bleach – these can damage the plant-based dyes. A professional deep clean is recommended every three to five years and should be carried out by a company specialising in oriental carpets. Direct sunlight causes the colours to fade over time; a light sunshade or rearranging the furniture can help prevent this.
