The term "plancha" is derived from Spanish and literally means "plate" or "surface " – and this is exactly what characterises the barbecue experience with a plancha. Food is cooked on a solid, flat grill plate made of steel, cast iron, or stainless steel, which sits directly above a heat source such as gas or charcoal. Unlike a conventional grid grill, the heat from a plancha grill is distributed evenly across the entire cooking surface. This not only enables highly precise temperature control but also a wide range of cooking options.

The plancha has its origins in Spain and France, where it is traditionally used in the foodservice industry to prepare a range of dishes.
