Wie gut schlafen Sie eigentlich?

Warum Ihre Schlafqualität entscheidend für Ihre Gesundheit, Ihre Leistungsfähigkeit – und Ihr Wohlbefinden ist.

How well do you actually sleep?

Why the quality of your sleep is crucial for your health, your performance – and your well-being.

Good sleep is like a good piece of furniture: you only realise how important it is when it's missing. Many people wake up in the morning feeling more exhausted than when they went to bed – even though they have slept the recommended seven to eight hours. The reason is often not the length of sleep, but the quality of sleep. And this can be specifically improved.

Sleep quality is more than sleep duration

Just because you spend eight hours in bed doesn't mean that your body has regenerated. The decisive factor is how restful your sleep was: did you sleep through the night? How often did you toss and turn? Did you feel tension or pressure points when you woke up? These are all indications of whether your sleep system - i.e. the combination of mattress, slatted frame, pillow, duvet and bed frame - is optimised for you.

What happens during sleep

During sleep, our body regenerates on several levels:

Physically

Muscles relax, cells regenerate, the immune system works more intensively.

Mental

What has been learnt is processed and stored, emotional stimuli are sorted.

Hormonal

Important hormones such as melatonin, growth hormone and cortisol are regulated.

If this process is disturbed – e.g. by lying down incorrectly, waking up frequently or not getting enough deep sleep – this can have long-term consequences: Tiredness, back pain, concentration problems, irritability and even high blood pressure or burnout.

The most common causes of poor sleep

Many factors influence our sleep. And while stress, diet and digital media are well-known, one key factor is often overlooked: the bed itself. Yet it is the basis for restful sleep - or the opposite.

Typical disruptive factors

Wrong mattress
Too hard, too soft, sagging or not adapted to your body.
Unsuitable slatted frame
Does not support the mattress properly - or is not adjustable at all.
Old sleeping system
Mattresses lose their support, hygienic properties and comfort after 7-10 years.
Inappropriate pillow
Too high, too flat, wrong filling - and therefore tension in the morning.
Fluctuating room temperature
or poor air quality.
Sources of light or noise
that unconsciously disturb your sleep.

What many people don't realise: Differences between partners in the same bed - for example in body weight, sleeping position or temperature requirements - can also have a negative effect on sleep.
